The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution


 Hyogo Earthquake Memorial 21st Century Research Institute (Hem21)
Hem21 aims to reveal the issues of modern civilization brought to light by the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, conducts research on various regional and policy issues on the themes of "creating safe and secure communities" and "realizing a society of coexistence," and presents its results along with policy proposals. Also manages the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution (DRI) and the Hyogo Institute for Traumatic Stress.

 The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake Memorial Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution (DRI)
Established to pass down the experience and lessons learned from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake to future generations, and to spread knowledge and technology related to disaster risk reduction. In addition to carrying out practical research on disaster risk reduction and human resources development in this field, it also runs an exhibition facility to convey the experiences and lessons learned from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.

 Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) Kansai Centre
Established as the Kansai base of IGES, an international strategic research institute which tackles global environmental issues. With a focus on industry and the environment, it conducts research, policy proposals and promotion activities in cooperation with academic research institutes and businesses in Kansai, as well as organizations and research institutes throughout Japan and the world, mainly in the Asia-Pacific region.
Established as the Kansai base of IGES, an international strategic research institute which tackles global environmental issues. With a focus on industry and the environment, it conducts research, policy proposals and promotion activities in cooperation with academic research institutes and businesses in Kansai, as well as organizations and research institutes throughout Japan and the world, mainly in the Asia-Pacific region.

 Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) Center
Established as an inter-governmental network to promote international cooperative research related to the global environment in the Asia-Pacific region. Works on supporting research activities on changes in climate, ecosystem, land use, atmosphere, land and coastal areas; development of scientific ability of developing countries; promotion of linkage between science and policies; and educational activities.

 Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC)
Following the designation of the International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction by the United Nations, ADRC was established to contribute to reducing damage caused by disasters in the Asian region, based on the lessons learned from the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. As the central institution that promotes international cooperation in the field of disaster risk reduction in Asia, ADRC conducts personnel exchange of professionals from disaster-related institutions in various nations, collection and provision of information on disaster risk reduction, human resources development, enhancement of communities’ disaster response capabilities, and utilization of satellite technology in disaster risk reduction.

 International Recovery Platform (IRP)
An international platform established to promote better recovery from disasters, with members consisting of 12 government and government-related institutions including the Japanese Government, Hyogo Prefecture and United Nations institutions. In addition to collecting and communicating knowledge and information necessary for recovery after disasters, carries out initiatives such as educating people for future disaster recovery, and recovery support after large-scale disasters.

 International Center for Environmental Management of Enclosed Coastal Seas (EMECS)
After the holding of the first International Center for Environmental Management of Enclosed Coastal Seas Conference (EMECS Conference) in Kobe, the center was established as an international organization for information exchange and research aiming to achieve environmental conservation and appropriate use of enclosed coastal seas. It is engaged in the activities related to EMECS Conferences, investigation and research on enclosed coastal seas, and trainings on environmental management technology.

 The Association for the Environmental Conservation of the Seto Inland Sea
The Seto Inland Sea is one of the greatest places of scenic beauty in the world, and an asset to be shared among Japanese citizens as a treasure trove of fishery resources. The association works to conserve the environment within the Seto Inland Sea. It is engaged in the popularization of ideas, raising awareness, investigation and research, and collecting and providing information regarding environmental conservation in the Seto Inland Sea.

 United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) Disaster Prevention Planning Hyogo Office

Conducts training programs and scientific research to increase ability to formulate and enact plans related to regional development in developing countries. Hyogo Office works on training and investigation and research with the aim of spreading planning technology to create a region which is strong against disasters, making use of the lessons learned from the Great Hanshin Earthquake as part of the disaster prevention department’s initiatives.

 United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) ReliefWeb Kobe
The office, alongside New York and Geneva, operates ReliefWeb which provides real-time information on the world’s natural disasters and conflicts in cooperation with NGOs, governmental institutions, and international institutions to support humanitarian aid activities.
